Standard 10: Leadership and Collaboration
InTASC 10 discusses leadership and collaboration in the education field. Standard Ten of InTASC speaks on the importance of setting goals for improvement of knowledge and skills for students as well as the importance of collaborating with school leadership and community. Teachers should be involved with their community; having good relationships the school community creates trust. The collaboration of teachers, admin, and others provides an exchange of ideas and advice that will not only create community but also ensure school professionals are on the same page on what is best for students. To demonstrate this standard, I will be discussing student leadership in the Hollins community; 8th grade team meetings; and professional learning community (PLC) meetings.
Student Leadership in Hollins Community: A teacher should be involved with their school’s community by acting as a positive leader and role model. For the past two years, I have been the President of the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Alliance (APISA). My involvement in this affinity group has allowed me to advocate and celebrate the diverse Asian and Pacific Islander cultures on campus where we are a minority. My leadership in creating meaningful events to spread awareness and culture demonstrates standard ten. As teachers, we need to promote the cultural diversity we have in our schools and encourage the collaboration of different identities. By doing this, we foster a stronger, closer community.
Attached is the student leadership board for APISA and the calendar of events I created on Canva for this year’s Asian American & Pacific Islander heritage month.

Weekly 8th Grade Team Meetings: Having weekly meetings with all the grade 8 teachers allows for better communication within the entire grade level. In these meetings, teachers from the entire grade meet together to discuss grade level topics like grade-level specific field trips, testing procedures, hallway procedures, and more. These meetings demonstrate the InTASC standard of leadership and collaboration as they create community within the 8th grade teachers and ensure proper and clear communication.

Weekly PLC Meetings: Having consistent team meetings with other teachers in the department and administrators allows for collaboration of ideas.
Every Monday morning, I attended the professional learning community (PLC) meetings with my supervising teacher. During these meetings, teachers from the English department of all grade levels, Special Education teachers, and English Language Learning teachers join administration and the school’s instructional coach in discussing progress, development, and strategies for the classroom. The PLC meetings demonstrate the InTASC standard of leadership and collaboration as administrators and the instructional coaches are leading workshops and trainings for the English teachers of the building, so they are continuously improving and learning. One of the topics discussed was how to use Lexia and its statistics to see where students are developmentally in grammar, comprehension, and word study.
